Food of choice: Indian – the spicier the better! However I tend to embrace and enjoy the culinary delights of whatever location I happen to be in!

The best moment of your life so far: Seeing my first child come into the world. Like nothing you could prepare yourself for. I’ve never felt so many emotions all at the same time.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given: Don’t worry, it will all be alright in the end.

Favorite editing app: I usually use Snapseed first for general tidying up and then PicFX or Luminance. Luminance is my all time favourite, but these days I often find simply using Steph in EyeEm is all I need!

Favorite album on EyeEm: Architectural detail. It’s the best kind of detail.

A pro tip for taking nice photos: Always be ready! Try something new! Look at the details! Try to look at things like it’s the first time you’ve seen them! Did you say ‘one’ tip?

EyeEm LA Meetup: Venice Edition at Muscle Beach by Jen Pollack Bianco on EyeEm

It started in the cramped and raucous boardwalk hang called the Venice Ale House and ended sometime after a lengthy stay at the Townhouse speakeasy just off the walk. In the glowing light of dusk and besides the bulging chests of men in tiny pants at Venice’s famous Muscle Beach gym, the participants of the EyeEm LA Meet Up: Venice Edition gathered for a team picture and then slowly disbanded. A handful headed out of Venice and a some others stayed together a little longer to enjoy more of what this quirky enclave of overstimulation had to offer. Seems everyone had more fun than a bucket full of two headed turtles. Here’s how the rest of the Meet Up went.

The group gathered outside the Venice Ale House, a spot chosen by our Venice’s own Theresa Solis and Ryan Vaarsi, who where the inspiration for having it at Venice and were great hosts. While everyone put on their name tags and readied to leave, a late comer who had previously said could not make it made it. It was Robin’s Bday weekend and she decided to spend part of it with us!

From there we walked down the famed Venice boardwalk and attempted to capture anything that was on the list of our image scavenger hunt. Some of the items on the list: drum circle, Zoltar machine, Tree Man, lowrider bikes, surfers, old school rollerskates, and 2 headed turtles. Some stayed with the program and others just decided to click at anything interesting and there was plenty to capture. The group walked onto the beach to check out the drum circle. We headed to the skate park and then eventually headed to the famous Touch of Evil (Orson Welles film) arches where a little historic speakeasy called the Townhouse became a much needed dark and comfy oasis from the noise and sun. Cocktails, phone recharging, photo editing and some good conversations followed.

After the Townhouse, the group made one last stop at Muscle Beach before splitting into the two groups.

1. Upload frequently

This one is easy! Imagine your EyeEm followers as good friends or family – they are happy to hear from you every now and then. However, be careful not to overwhelm them.

2. Update your profile information

Introduce yourself and tell the community a little about what you do, where you’re from, what you ate for breakfast, etc. A nice photo of yourself is also great to have.

3. Use your album tags effectively & tell a story

Your photos are categorized by albums based on topics and locations, so it’s important to find the albums that describe your image best. You can use up to 4 albums tags to categorize your photos.

Pro tip: You can always use captions to add longer text to your photos. Everyone loves stories. So why don’t you share yours?

4. Get active in the community

You don’t have to remain silent. Start a conversation with other users by commenting on what you particularly liked about their photo. Feel free to ask other users questions about tips and techniques.

5. Discover & follow new people

There are many ways to discover and get in touch with other EyeEm photographers: Use the Discover feed, check out the Popular stream, browse your favorite albums or take part in an EyeEm Mission!

6. Be a local hero

Check the Around You feed regularly. Someone new in your area? Give them a warm welcome and say hi.

Best thing to do in real life: stay updated about the worldwide EyeEm Meetups - or just start your own wherever you are.

7. Set a trend – start a movement

Ever thought about starting your own photo project? A unique story and album can be really inspiring to the community and they will be motivated to take part. The emptychairsproject is a great example of such a project.

Pro tip: If you want others to join your project just use the invite friends feature to let them know.

8. Improve your photographic skills

Improving your photographic skills is easy and fun – just try out some of our Tips &Ttricks. Educate yourself and advance your techinques for shooting photos. Take photos whenever you can and train your trigger finger.

To train your eye: visit photo exhibitions or get your hands on some photography magazines. Get together with friends to shoot photos. Experiment with different techniques of editing and selecting photos.

9. Have fun!

EyeEm is, first and foremost, here for you to enjoy and get creative. So give it some time, open your eyes, experiment frequently, share your experiences and most of all have fun!

We had a small, but enthusiastic turnout for the first EyeEm Denver Meetup on Sunday, May 5. Denver is a small city (by global city standards), but full of culture (and construction!), so plenty of photo opportunities.

We decided our focus would be on people and architecture. There’s not much for old architecture in Denver, but a lot of glass for reflection. And on the people side, it’s always fun to people watch on the 16th Street Mall. We’re looking forward to our next meet up and will explore another part of Denver!

All the events in my life are special to me, each event has its own impression. One of the most memorable one was when I held an iPhoneography workshop recently in Jakarta. I didn’t think that I could give inspiration to others through the photographs I take. I really appreciate this experience.

On April 25 the local EyeEm Berlin community gathered at the EyeEm courtyard to stroll through the city and capture the works of JR on the streets. With more than 50 people taking photos together this was our biggest photo walk so far.

The lowdown

What: French street artist JR visited Berlin and pasted some of his larger-than-life murals on the walls. As long time fans of his work we hosted an EyeEm Meetup to visit some of the artworks and take photos together in a relaxed atmosphere.

When: April 25, 2013

Who: photography & street art lovers from near and far

Where: through Berlin Mitte, finishing up at Weinbergspark with some cold beer

The story:

It all started in the courtyard of the EyeEm Studio. Everyone received a name badge and the route we’re going to take to spot as many JRs as possible. As soon as we started out we realized: wow, this group is big. It takes a while when 50 people cross the streets and take photos at the same time. 

Arriving at the first mural was really impressive. Besides everyone getting really creative with snapping photos using all kinds of devices (from tablets to phones to DSLR and analog cameras) the dimension of JR’s artwork was immense. Thanks to Stephanie climbing the shoulders of Matias we even managed to take a photo of the whole group.

After around 90 minutes of shooting around town the photo walk ended at Weinbergspark in the centre of Berlin. Lorenz organized some cold beer and a honorable jury was formed to pick the best photos taken during the walk.
