Hi guys,
our first Photo Hack Day in Berlin is over! It was an incredible event for us and we’re proud that it went off so well. Around 40 developers and designers came to work on projects together and hack through the night to present their ideas to the public on Sunday afternoon. The jury then had the hard task to select the winners… but before we go into that, let’s see what was happening during the two days at Photo Hack Day!
DAY 1
Saturday, 10AM: the crowd gathers inside the pool to listen to the API demos and talk about projects and ideas.
After that some teams went straight to work..
While others were still discussing their ideas in the pool.
But you shouldn’t forget to play: to fuel your creative engines the guys from AKQA put a ping pong table in the middle of the room. Here’s Caroline, Luke, Stephanie and Severin playing a match. Who do you think won?
Less physical but even more fun: the photo booth the guys from Kluuu brought in. It was an original model from the 60s and fully operational. We started a little Photo Hack Day Gallery to commemorate the moments of the weekend..
Now look at this young man! While his mum was busy working he sneaked into the photo booth and made some funny pictures.
While the participants were hacking away on their laptops, journalists came by to see what’s happening. Here’s Alex filming a feature for his up-and-coming mobile photography magazine The Hidecap..
Stattbad Wedding actually consists of 2 swimming pools. Inside the other swimming pool a group of skaters has built an incredible half-pipe. Adi Binder, who was actually coming for Photo Hack Day, turned out to be quite an awesome skater.
But let’s go back to the hackers pool. As the afternoon went on, people were gathering inside the pool again to work on their stuff.
Also outside the pool people were busy. What can you see on this photo? Luke is surrounded by charming ladies and drinks a beer. It was Luke’s birthday that day. Happy birthday Luke!
No beer for Ramz: he’s powering through the day with coffee and coke. His hands are so fast we could only capture the motion blur!
Pizza time!
Water came out of these beautiful carafes that also the ancient Greeks used to drink from.
At around 8pm the night shift started: with the lights down low the teams worked concentrated on their hacks while the photos from the blue album were projected in the swimming pool. So amazing to see all these beautiful images in the pool. The EyeEm Community rocks!
Now let’s fade out of day 1 with a few impressions from Saturday night:
DAY 2:
Sunday 8AM: the night becomes day and we meet the hackers after a night with not much sleep. Here’s Hany having a nap inside the Photo Booth.
Here’s a hacker with pointy boots who hides from the sunlight pouring in through the windows.
Severin came to rescue and made coffee for everyone. He also shaved for the first time in 2 years and people suddenly realized he looked like Brendan Fraser.
Coffee is obviously the most important thing at a hackathon. Thank god the guys from Coffee Circle provided their excellent roasts and made everyone happy as a bean.
PB&J time! Peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches are just the right start into day 2 of Photo Hack Day.
With the carbohydrates back on track the ping pong went into the next round. Flo found a partner with a matching blue t-shirt and so did Felix with his green jumper..
In early afternoon the demo watchers came to see what the participants of Photo Hack Day worked on in the past 25 hours. Here’s the AKQA crew together with Mike Betts, who was also part of the jury.

More and more people came and filled up the swimming pool..
…while there were also guests watching the presentations from the balustrade.
The presentations started and the 7 teams presented their projects.

And the winner is… Team Phudge! They came up with an awesome hack that randomly “phudges” photos into multiple exposures. The whole team won a weekend trip to London with the chance to present their idea at the AKQA headquarters.
So far we hope you enjoyed this little journey through our first Photo Hack Day. It was an honor for us to welcome so many talented participants and have so many visitors coming to see what the future of photography has in stash for us.
